I have been in Lund, Sweden for the past three weeks. I'm studying at Lund University, specifically at the Lunds tekniska högskola (Lund Institute of Technology).
Lund is a great town, in a way quite similar to Champaign, IL because the university runs the town. Basically it is a student city. Everybody's a student. As a town, Lund is quite traditional: a cathedral at the center of the city with cobblestone streets all around. All the streets are quite convoluted & don't look like a modern city's gridded streets which is a little confusing sometimes.
Classes started out this week and they've been great so far. Everything is so much more relaxed here than back at Illinois. For example, every class is listed to start on the hour (e.g. 10 AM) but by university regulation the class can't start until quarter past the hour (e.g. 10:15 AM). The environment in the classes is great; all the professors are really helpful and friendly. Class size is also usually quite small compared to our huge lecture classes at U of I.
Since I've been here, I've also taken a two week crash course in swedish language but I really don't know how much I know. I can say basic things like thanks, hello, my name is and so on. It's better than not knowing anything at all I suppose.
